In the era of smart homes, the strength of your WiFi connection has never been more critical, especially when it comes to security devices like your Ring Doorbell. 

RSSI or Received Signal Strength Indicator, a measure of how well your device is receiving the signal from your WiFi, plays a pivotal role in the performance of Ring devices. A strong and stable RSSI ensures seamless connectivity, instant alerts, and hence, a secure home.

You can significantly boost the connectivity and performance of your Ring devices by improving the RSSI value. This guide will help you check your RSSI using the Ring app and provide you with practical solutions to improve weak WiFi connections.

What is Ring’s RSSI?

In today’s digital age, a reliable and robust WiFi connection is more than just a convenience – it’s practically a necessity. 

This is especially true when your home’s security relies on smart devices like your Ring Doorbell. A strong WiFi signal is the backbone of these devices, enabling seamless connectivity, instant alerts, and peace of mind.

RSSI is a measure of the power level a device is receiving from the wireless network. 

A smaller absolute number signifies a stronger signal. In other words, the closer the RSSI value is to 0, the better. For instance, an RSSI of -30 means a stronger and more stable connection than an RSSI of -60. 

The lowest value Ring will display is -60.

How to Check Your Ring’s WiFi Signal Strength (RSSI)

Understanding your RSSI is the first step towards improving your WiFi signal strength. 

If you’re a user of the Ring app, the process of checking your RSSI is straightforward.

To check your Ring’s RSSI, open the Ring app, tap the three lines (☰) on the top left corner, select “Devices”, then choose the Ring device you want to check. Navigate to “Device Health” and under the “Network” section, look for “Signal Strength” which represents your RSSI.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to Check Your Ring’s RSSI:

  1. Open the Ring app on your device.
  1. Tap the three lines (☰) located on the top left corner of the Dashboard.
  1. From the options that appear, tap on “Devices” and select the Ring device you want to check.
  1. Tap on “Device Health.”
  1. Under the “Network” section, look for “Signal Strength.” This represents your RSSI.

The value displayed will be color-coded to indicate the connection strength. Green indicates a strong connection, amber signifies a moderate connection, and red denotes a weak or poor connection.

Ring has an article describing how to check Wifi Signal Strength. These are the same steps I described, but I’m putting them here in case there’s an update, and I haven’t had a chance to describe those changes here.

Once you’ve determined your RSSI, you can then take the necessary steps to optimize your WiFi signal strength.

Reasons You Have a Low RSSI Value: Understanding Poor WiFi Connections

Poor WiFi connections can be influenced by various factors. Some of these include:

Physical Obstructions

Certain materials can reduce or interfere with WiFi signals. Heavy-duty walls and floors made of concrete, brick, or metal can all negatively impact your signal strength. Similarly, household objects such as fish tanks, bookcases, mirrors, and even large glass windows can cause interference.

Household Electronics

TVs, game consoles, cell phones, tablets, computers, baby monitors, and other household appliances can all compete for your WiFi signal. If they’re all getting a signal from the same router, it could lead to signal degradation.

Competing WiFi Networks

If you live in a densely populated area or an apartment building, there can be dozens of WiFi networks around you. This can cause interference and lower the quality of your network.

Using a mobile device hotspot instead of a home WiFi network

Ring video doorbells and security cameras are intended to be used with a home WiFi network. Using a hotspot instead may cause failed setup attempts or your Ring device to continually disconnect from WiFi.

How to Fix a Ring Low RSSI Value and Improve WiFi Signal Strength

Once you’ve identified the possible issues, you can start optimizing your WiFi signal strength. Here are some quick fixes and more detailed troubleshooting tips you can try. Start at the top of the list and work your way down.

Move your router into an open space

Routers can be negatively affected by obstructions and interference. If your router is tucked away in a closet or hidden behind furniture, it may inadvertently be reducing the strength of your WiFi signal. 

By moving it into an open space, you can help ensure that the signal is not being blocked and can spread throughout your home more effectively.

Avoid physical obstructions

Certain materials can reduce the range of WiFi signals or interfere with them. These include heavy-duty walls and floors made of concrete, brick, or metal and household objects such as fish tanks, bookcases, mirrors, and large glass windows.

Try moving your router to another location

The optimal distance between a router and a Ring device is less than 20 feet. If your router is further than this, you may find that the signal strength is not sufficient for your Ring device to function properly. 

Consider moving your router closer to your Ring device or vice versa. Remember, walls and other physical barriers can weaken the signal.

Move your Ring device closer to the router

Conversely, if you can’t move your router, try moving your Ring device. Shortening the distance the WiFi signal has to travel can result in a stronger and more reliable connection.

Limit interference from household electronics

Other electronics and devices, especially those that emit a wireless signal, can interfere with your WiFi connection. 

This includes devices like TVs, game consoles, cell phones, tablets, computers, baby monitors, cordless phones, and even other WiFi routers. 

If you notice that your Ring device is going offline frequently, try unplugging these potential sources of interference to see if the connection improves. If this improves your connection, try connecting them directly using Ethernet.

Use a Wired Connection for High Demand Devices

If you have devices that require a lot of bandwidth, such as game consoles or streaming devices, consider using a wired Ethernet connection instead of WiFi. This can free up WiFi bandwidth for your other devices.

Implement QoS Settings

Quality of Service (QoS) settings allow you to prioritize certain types of internet traffic. For example, if you frequently video call or game, you can set these activities to have priority, ensuring that they always have the bandwidth they need.

Switch channels

Most routers are automatically set to switch channels to the least crowded option. If your router doesn’t have this enabled, log in and turn it on.

Switch to a 5 GHz signal

Most Ring devices are designed to function with a 2.4 GHz WiFi signal, which has a longer range. 

However, a 5 GHz signal allows for more bandwidth but has a shorter range. If your device is compatible and in range, consider switching to a 5 GHz signal.

If you are having trouble with a 5 GHz connection, try switching to a 2.4 GHz WiFi signal.

Adjust The Router’s Output Power Settings

Certain routers offer the capability to increase the strength of the wireless signal by logging into the router settings. 

Adjusting these settings to increase the power output, you can extend the range of your wireless coverage.

In general, it’s best practice not to have your WiFi turned up so much that it’s broadcasting too far outside your house.

Get a WiFi extender

If moving your router or Ring device isn’t an option, or if you have a larger home where the signal needs to cover a significant distance, a WiFi extender could be a solution. WiFi extenders boost your existing signal, extending its range and strengthening the signal to areas that your router can’t reach on its own.

Consider upgrading. Invest in a Quality Router

Technology advances rapidly, and if your router is more than 3 to 5 years old, it may not be providing you with the best possible internet. It is recommended by several companies to update your router in the 3 to 5 year range.

Newer models often offer improved speed and range capabilities, more consistent connections, and features like dual-band support, which can significantly enhance the performance of devices like your Ring doorbell.

I realize that routers are expensive and not something most people want to replace every couple of years. If you have a lot of smart home devices, you’ll want to upgrade more often than someone who doesn’t.

Use a Mesh WiFi System

Unlike a single router that might struggle to cover a large area, a mesh system uses multiple access points to create a ‘mesh’ of coverage. This can be especially useful in larger homes or spaces where the WiFi signal needs to reach multiple floors or rooms.
